Sloths can be described as short, stocky, slightly rotund animals with long limbs and tiny ears. This pretty much sums up the appearance of Sunshine Coast Men’s captain, Josh Bidgood but what this guy lacks in physical attributes, he makes up for in ability and speed…..and he will be leading the Sloths to what he hopes will be Grand Final glory.
Whilst Bidgood is confident about what the 2017 campaign will bring, he is under no illusions that the Sunshine Coast will be a feared and revered entity this year.
“Last year we surprised a few teams finishing first for Mixed and competing strongly in the Mens. However, this year we have a target on our heads and we have lost that element of surprise.”
Indeed if you look at the performance of the Sunshine Coast across the carnival, they were the standout region with arguably only West Brisbane, challenging their dominance as a unit.
On the back of glory in the 2016 Australian Championships, TRL has boomed on the Sunshine Coast with the marquee competition on Wednesday nights going well above 30 teams and a new competition further south at Caloundra kicking some big goals. Ben Maddick, General Manager of TRL Sunshine Coast is especially proud of the culture he and Shelby Geddes have built.
“We have been working hard to push our brand up here and we have developed a really good culture on the Coast. For us it is all about providing the best competition on the Coast – both in terms of how it is run but what the player’s get for their money. As such we put on functions and try to give back where we can. This culture has translated into a very strong social scene but also strong Representative teams that love travelling away for TRL”
In fact there is so much interest in the Representative scene that the Sunshine Coast will actually be bringing two Mixed teams to the 2017 Australian Championships. This is a great sign for TRL on the Sunshine Coast and demonstrates just how much love there is for the game up there.
Finally, when asked about who they would love to beat the most, the leadership group from the Sunshine Coast unanimously declared Cronulla! The Maddicks, Geddes, Schmidts and Bidgoods of this world are looking forward to meeting them again on the hallowed turf of Redcliffe Stadium.
